Michigan – Summer 2014

Michigan

One of my goals in the past has been to take more personal photos and blog them, so all you know what I’m up to besides having the best job in the world. I haven’t done a great job of it so far, but I have a two different posts in the queue right now. The first is our vacation with my family to Michigan. I’ve never lived in Michigan, but my family has been vacationing there for as long as I can remember. Michigan in the summer is the absolute best. It’s 80 degrees with zero humidity. It’s sweet corn and watermelon and campfires and cards by the river. I can’t explain how much I love going there and how many wonderful memories we’ve made.

At the beginning of July Stephen and I spent a week with my family at our cabin on the Clam River. There was kayaking, swimming, frisbee, and a whole lot of reading and relaxing, which is exactly the way a vacation should be. One of our favorite things is exploring all the dirt roads, but for now all we’ve got to do it in is a mini-van. THAT is always an adventure.

In the middle of the trip we drove up to the Mackinac Bridge and spent a night on Mackinac Island. The Island is like nowhere else I’ve ever been. It’s famous for it’s fudge (why wouldn’t you want to go to a place like that?) and for it’s ban on all motor vehicles (except snowmobiles in the winter). There are bikes and horse-drawn carriages bustling around Main Street and it feels like you’ve walked into another world. We spent one afternoon riding bikes around the island (it only takes about an hour) and visiting the old fort (the island was a strategic location in both the 7 years war and the war of 1812). If you ever get a chance to visit you should!
