Sessions with active little ones aren’t easy, but they’re some of my favorites! My own son Benjamin has a TON of energy and can’t be outside without exploring, so I’m used to it. I got to shoot with little Nova a couple weeks ago, and I loved her adventurous spirit. For me, photographing kids like that isn’t about making them do what I say, it’s about making great photos WHILE they’re exploring. That captures their personalities better than a pose ever could! This is easier said than done for sure, and it’s a lot easier with only one kiddo, but it often yields some of my favorite photos! Like this one above of Nova picking flowers. She’s the sweetest!!

This is actually one of my biggest tips for families with little kids. Let them be kids! I will keep taking photos the whole time they’re doing their thing, and we’ll take posed photos in between the exploring. ALL kids have trouble looking at the camera and smiling over and over again, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get any great photos!

But back to the Bossiers. I’ve done a Mother’s Day session for them for the last two years. It’s amazing to see how much little Nova has grown in that time. Her personality was starting to come out last year at 6 months old, and now you can really see her curiosity and joy. We did last year’s session at the camp too, so we decided to try to use different spots this time. We started the session at 8am, and I’ve never seen the lake look more beautiful! That’s another suggestion for families with littles…morning sessions! Then we made our way back to the swing in honor of Hannah’s grandfather outside one of the dorms. By that point Nova was completely over sitting still, but I love the photos of her running and chasing the bubbles. Happy Mother’s Day, Hannah!
